Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

This book (+ series) was my childhood. I don't know how many times I read this series and I was so excited when I discovered The Kane Chronicles and the Magnus Chase series. Then the movie came along and ruined Percy Jackson for me. People stopped reading the books and only watched the movies, while the members of the fandom, including myself, were very disappointed.

What I liked:

  • Percy's reactions to everything were very realistic since he had no idea what was going on or the rules of his new life as a demi-god.

  • The humor and one-liners. For me, the humor and character development were the main reasons I liked Percy Jackson way more than Harry Potter. They were always the first thing I used to defend PJO whenever we had the HP vs. PJO discussions in class

  • That he didn't know who his godly parent was, or that he just knew how his powers worked.

  • I felt that the plotline was unique and unpredictable, unlike other books that might fall into the YA category

  • The big theme was that we are not our parents and we don't have to let our parents' actions define us (sorry for the bad grammar)

What could have been better:

  • The movie. (T-T)

  • More representation? Diversity (in PJO) didn't really start until Nico, Leo, and Beckendorf
